After descending to the valley floor, we cross meadows and pass through stands of pine & spruce. A rusted metal camp site signals the time to ascend. The traverse steadily climbs as we pass below the base of California Peak. Sneak peaks of the basin come and go, and small streams make their way down to the river below. Remnants of an old miner’s cabin sit alongside the river as we reach 11,500’. Imagine “a day in the life” for one of these explorers! This hike begins with a short walk along the Rainbow Trail that parallels the wide-open Wet Mountain Valley. Aged and worn down, ponderosa pines reach for the skies near our starting elevation of 9,200’. Whispering tunnels of aspen are music to the ears as we hike alongside Swift Creek. With a careful eye, you can even spot a peaceful waterfall. High above the creek, Spread Eagle Peak stretches out in a powerful display of tectonic activity. Natural spring waters trickle down granite walls and feed abundant greenery. The new growth throughout this hike is comforting. Thousands of young pine and spruce growing up together outnumber the dead standing ones. Several switchbacks near fields of scree bring us within reach of the first lake. Resting amid tree line at 11,500’, The Lakes of the Clouds offer some of the greatest backcountry campsites imaginable. Runoff from basin walls feed into one spectacular waterfall. The sound alone washes away all worry. Each lake captures its own reflections of the mountains and offers anyone a front row seat to one of the finest shows on earth.
